Update (19/20 June) - Meeting News (21st June)
15/6/04
Dear Southland Sea Kayakers
TRIP CHANGE
I am changing the venue of this weekends kayak trip to Wanaka in view of the awful weather forecast for the Milford area. We have decided to go to Lake Wanaka and do day kayak trips from Wanaka.
I have booked my family into the Altamont Lodge, 121 Mt Aspiring Road, Wanaka (just past the Edgewater Resort) on the road to Glendhu Bay. This is a pleasant quiet lodge costs $48/double and $30/single a night. The phone number is 03-443 8864. I have asked Carleen, the caretaker to keep the remainder of the rooms for the Southland Sea Kayak people so if you are coming you need to ring and make a reservation NOW. Tell her you are part of the Southland Sea Kayak group. You need to bring your sleeping bags unless you want to pay more for sheets/linen. There is a lovely lounge and a kitchen to do your own cooking.
We are going up Friday night and have booked it for Saturday night as well. I plan to have a dinner for the Aplins at the lodge on Saturday night. I would like anyone coming to let me know and make the reservation yourself.
For Saturday we will kayak up the lake to some of the islands such as Mou Waho which is well worth the visit according to Belinda. The trips will depend on the level of experience and conditions.
MEETING
On Monday 21 June there is a SSKN evening at H&J Outdoor World, 27 Tay St., Invercargill at 7.30 PM in the conference room upstairs. The speaker is Max Grant of Quality kayaks who is also KASK treasurer. Max will be talking about kayaking at the Chatham Islands and I will be giving a rundown on how the network is progressing. This is a great opportunity to host a visiting kayak identity so I'm looking for a good turnout.
Lastly the SSKN has just recorded a first. Two Network members, Roger Deacon and John Sinclair recently climbed/skied the Grand Paridiso, a 4000 metre in Italy and I enclose the evidence. Gallery
Safe kayaking
