Summer Kayak Expedition
25/6/04
Dear Southland Sea Kayakers
I have put together the following programme for the proposed Kayak Expedition next summer in Preservation/Chalky Sounds and am looking for 15 participants now. The charter I've organised can take a maximum of 15 kayakers and kayaks over there. I would emphasise that participants will
need to be committed to the full camp and programme and not use us to assess the area for their own trip. This is an important understanding and will save embarrassment later.
The Programme is as follows:
Dates: Leave on 29/30 January 2005 from Riverton on a chartered 60' ship to Preservation Sound. Return on 12-13 February 2005 from Preservation Sound to Riverton. Approximate duration of expedition is 2 weeks.
Cost: Charter is approximately $ 400.00 round trip payable in advance and non-refundable. There are no other costs and everyone is expected to have enough food for 2 weeks plus camping gear, wet weather gear and kayaks. I will provide a list of everything well before we leave including maps.
We are planning the following activities:
Establish a base camp near Kisbee or at Te Oneroa. We will join a DOC party led by Ken Bradley and will work on a variety conservation projects in the area for 2-3 days. Ken has suggested a variety of projects and we will sort these out later. I am especially keen to be involved in the Endangered Species Project on Coal Island. Ken has indicated we are welcome to use the Oil Store for our trip.
Then we then start our exploration of the 2 Sounds. There is a wealth of history here and Ken has offered to guide us to historical sites. I also have considerable information on the area at my disposal. We will be wilderness camping as there are few huts here. I am also keen to run a kayak skills course and hope to entice some of the more experienced kayakers in KASK to join us on this expedition. Lastly I hope to run an evening at some stage on Wilderness/Kayak medicine
Participants need to have an intermediate level of kayaking experience as well as some camping experience and a reasonable level of fitness. I will sent out a registration form later and I need to be aware of any medical problems as well before I sign people on for the trip. I am a medical practitioner so need to be prepared for any emergencies. The success of the expedition will depend on the willingness of participants to work together to achieve our common goals. I know it will be a fantastic trip in a pristine remote area.
It is my intention to circulate this email to the Southland and Otago networks first and if we are still short of participants to publish this in the next KASK issue. I encourage our local members that if you are at all interested you contact me ASAP.
