There is a lot of kayaking action about the happen this coming summer. Presently Freya Hoffmeister is kayaking around the South Island. Freya is a German kayaking superstar known as the Lady in Black. She was only the third woman in the world to earn a tandem skydiving pilot licence. She once leapt out of a Russian jet over the North Pole. Now that’s cool!! Her piece of resistance is doing hand stands in a sea kayak on the water. She reached Smailles Beach on the Otago Peninsula yesterday. Not sure when she arrives here but I’d imagine she will keep going as weather looks good for a few days. I hope to organise a few kayakers to meet her outside Bluff Harbour if I can find out when she is arriving. Let me know if you are interested in joining a reception kayaking paddle. Her website is www.freyahoffmeister.blogspot.com
The “Crossing the Ditch” expedition kicked off last Thursday 14 November. Two young Sydney sea kayakers James Castrission and Justin Jones left Foster north of New Castle to paddle a purpose build double sea kayak to Auckland. They estimate it will take 40-50 days to cover the 2200 kilometres. They have meticulously planned their trip things are going well. Their website is www.crossingtheditch.com.au. They have an excellent podcast on their website. We wish them all the best.
Two other female overseas sea kayakers are also attempting to kayak independently around the South Island this summer_ Justin Curgenven and Babs Lindman.
Gordon and Morag Brown are arriving soon on a holiday. They run Skyak Adventures on Skye in Scotland. Gordon is a highly qualified kayaking instructor and has written a seas kayaking manual “Sea Kayak” Pesda Press 2006.
We hope to host these folk when they are in Invercargill and the payback will be an evening on their adventures or a pool session on rolling.
Alan Ohad who came out her 2 summers ago is now planning a first circumnavigation of Svalbard in the northern summer of 2008. The Svalbard archipelago lies between latitude 75-81’ north and has about 1800 kilometres of shoreline. More details on their website www.ohad.info

If you have any paddlers interested in Greenland kayaks, could you advise them please of:
Paul Caffyn has imported 10 copies of Harvey Golden’s monumental work, ‘Kayaks of Greenland The history and Development of the Greenlandic Hunting Kayak, 1600 – 2000.
Published in 2006; 580+ pages, 400+ figures and photos, 106 scale drawings of kayaks. 79 scale drawings of paddles.
For anyone interested in the history and development of Greenland kayaks, the book is rather good but for those interested in buidling Greenland style kayaks or paddles, it is a treasure trove.
Price including p&p or courier delivery to South Island addresses, $110

Kayaking Trips
Anyone keen to lead a trip let me know and I’ll publish it on our site. I’ve been busy with biking and climbing trips lately but should be back on the water soon.
Safe Kayaking
