Dear Southland Sea Kayakers
Our network continues to grow and we now have 44 Southland members. I've been away for most of the last 2 weeks and have not had the time to plan our evening meetings or trip list for the year yet but intend to focus on this soon. Mark and I are keen to organise a skills course on surf landings and launchings and I hope to get this organised for March. In addition I am keen to have a follow on day practising some of the skills we covered in our first course and this is an opportunity for people who missed out to learn these skills. Let me know if you are interested in this.
On 7/8th of February three of our members along with visiting mountaineer Frank Johnston kayaked out and climbed Mitre Peak. This just illustrates what a wonderful sport sea kayaking is and what sort of adventures it can lead to. At the end of the newsletter I have enclosed a trip report as well as pasted in the account in case anyone cannot open the attachment.
Terry continues to work marvels with our web site. He will record articles and photos of club endeavours on it. check it out it's fantastic:

Visiting Scottish sea kayaker James Baxter visited us recently. James brought along his "Longhaul Folding Sea Kayak" which he erected for us. What an amazing craft complete with a sailing rig and outriggers. I suggested we take it across the Foveaux Strait before he leaves in 2 months time.
I am currently reading Chris Duffs "Southern Exposure" an account of his gripping solo kayak circumnavigation of the South Island in 2000. His gut wrenching account of the Fiordland coast leaves you gasping for air and wiping the spray off your face, a great read.
Safe kayaking
