Newsletter 48
Dear Southland Sea Kayakers
09/12/2016
It's been a year since I last did a newsletter for the SSKN and I'm not sure how many of you want to be part of this network. Please let me know if you don't want to be on our data base.
Our kayaking website is http://sskn.weebly.com/ and this is kindly managed by Terry Macnamara. I've been focussed on traversing the Southern Alps this year as well as going to Kyrgyzstan so I've not been doing much in the way of sea kayaking. However in July David Maynard did manage a lovely days sea kayaking from Omaui to Riverton via Halfway Rocks. We also paddled down Milford Sound to Anita Bay and back on a lovely sunny day. Now that I've completed the northern alps to Mt Cook I'm taking a break from climbing and am keen to get out paddling if anyone wants to give me a call. My ph number is 03-2157263 and CP 0210422640.
Mt daughter Tara is still at the cutting edge of expedition sea kayaking. From June to Sept she completed a kayak voyage from the Russian border along the whole length of Norway to Sweden solo. She does have a Facebook page. Currently she is kayak guiding in Antarctica for Quark Expeditions on the Sea Adventurer.
Sea Kayak wanted:
Henriette Beikirch is looking for a second hand polyethylene, large capacity sea kayak such as a Q-kayak
Skua or a Tasman Express or similar. She is 'tall lean-ish' and needs a kayak that can carry a months gear
and food. If you have a boat for sale please email her on henriette_beikirch at yahoo.co.nz
Alpha Sports:
Bruce Conway has a 1 week Special Sale of Res-Q-Link 406 GPS PLB and PDFs. I've enclosed the brochure as an attachment.
Kayaking evening:
I've been trying for some time to organise a kayaking network evening at my place to show some photos on my 2 Sea kayaking expeditions to Greenland in 2014 and 2015. I'm afraid I'll have to shelve it for the present as we've just had a lot of water damaged in our home from a leaking pipe when we were away.
Waitara Hydro Scheme
Most of you will be aware that Westpower wants to build a 'River-Run" hydro scheme on this iconic West Coast River. I've done a submission against this act of vandalism. Our Minister of Conservation thinks this is OK but I don't.
Wild Rivers National Park
Recently the Minister of Conservation gave consent in principal to Westpower to build a Hydro Scheme on the Waitaha River in Westland. The Waitaha is one of many wild rivers on the West Coast that are in Department of Conservation ‘stewardship’ and that lack adequate legal protection unlike rivers in national parks elsewhere. I propose that a new national park be established north of Westland Tai Poutini National Park to be called "Wild Rivers National Park" and to include the following rivers and valleys as follows
The country included is of outstanding conservation and recreational value and lacks adequate legal protection under its present "stewardship" classification. I feel it warrants Unesco "World Heritage Status" and this would enhance our international reputation unlike hydro schemes, which would be seen as vandalism of our wild rivers. I have sent this proposal to the Lou Sanson, Director General of Conservation and the Minister of Conservation and I’d be grateful if you would support me by writing to them. So far the response has been negative. I enclose the letter from Mark Adams, West Coast DOC Operators Manager.
Thank You
I wish you all a happy festive season.
Best wishes
Stanley
