Dear Southland Sea Kayakers
12/12/2012
Thanks to everyone who replied to my email a few weeks ago enquiring if you wanted to stay on the Southland Sea Kayakers Network database. We now have 46 members and it is hoped to run a few trips over the summer and also to provide a forum for paddlers to find someone to go paddling with. I welcome trip reports, for sale kayaking gear and any news of interest to kayakers. Thanks to Terry Macnamara for hosting our excellent website http://sskn.uniformnz.com
News:
First my daughter Tara recently became the youngest and only sea kayaker to circumnavigate the South Island in winter in often atrocious conditions. Her epic story is recorded on her website www.winterkayakers.blogspot.co.nz I've enclosed the front page of the recent KASK magazine which has an article on her journey.
She paddled a Q-Kayaks Skua which she rated very highly. Q-kayaks have a great range of quality kayaks for all levels of kayaking. Check their website http://www.q-kayaks.co.nz/
Bruce Conway is restarting an online kayaking store.
This is his recent email to me
Hi Stanley
You might be interested that I am working on re-launching Kayaks Plus as an online store.
At the moment, I have special prices on Palm PFDs and kayaking clothing. Lots of people from around the South Island have bought this gear from me over last 3 weeks. These special prices are valid until just before Christmas (Friday 22 December).
You're welcome to circulate the attached PDF.
The Palm 'Kaikoura Tour' PFD may interest some of the SSKN members. It's on my website at the moment for $343 (RRP $429) http://kayaksplus.alphaoutdoors.co.nz/specials/palm-pfds-on-special/
Trips
The weather this weekend looks very good for a paddle especially Saturday. The wind looks like it will be getting up on Sunday. I am available for a paddle if anyone is interested. I have a few suggestions such as a paddle from Omaui to Bluff or vice-verse depending on the tides or say to Tihaka Island off Howells Point or perhaps at Lake Hauroko or Manapouri. I'm open to suggestions and the trip will depend on the level of experience. Ring or send me a text to my CP 0210422640 or ring me at home 03-2157263. I'll be out at a meeting Thursday night 7-10PM so unavailable then.
KASK:
I would encourage everyone in the network to become a member of our national sea kayaking association called Kiwi Association of Sea kayakers. Membership is only $35.00 and details are on their website http://www.kask.org.nz/
Lastly I wish you all a Merry Christmas and New Year.
Stanley Mulvany
