Dear Southland Sea Kayakers
I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year. This year promises to be an exciting year for Southland sea kayaking. Plans are well advanced for our first skills weekend on 31 January -1 February based at the Monowai Holiday Camp near Borland Lodge. This will be a useful course for everyone no matter what your level of ability. We will have several demonstration kayaks available, courtesy of Matt for people who do not own a kayak.
The weather has not been conducive to kayaking with strong westerlies and north westerlies. Before Christmas we went out to beyond Omaui on a trip from Whalers Bay and had to battle the wind and waves on our return. Terry and I had to head back out to sea to shepherd in our girls who were having a bit of a struggle in the conditions. Over New Year Terry did some kayaking at
Waikawa. Matt and I had a pleasant paddle up the Oreti River recently.
Terry Macnamara is developing a website for the network. This should be up and running soon. The address is http://sskn.uniformnz.com I have formed a committee so we can implement our goals for the year. Responsibilities have been delegated as follows-
Matt Sillars: advise on kayaks and associated equipment
