Dear Southland Sea Kayakers
It is a month since I returned from Tibet and I have now organised a programme of activities over the winter which should kick start the network. I have not received any trip reports from members so I’m not sure if there is much happening out there. The course John Kirk-Anderson was going to run in March was cancelled because of bad weather and I’m hoping we can reschedule it in spring. I was keen to have it at Moeraki as sea conditions are more dependable on the east coast and also it is closer to Christchurch were John lives.
Sea Kayak Course:
I have organised 4 rolling classes over the winter starting on Sunday 25th June at Splash Palace.
Dates:
Sunday 25 June
Sunday 2 July
Sunday 9 July
Sunday 16 July
Time: 4.30-6.30 PM
Venue: Splash Palace
Cost: Admission charge + a few dollars for Stanley for cost of lane hire
What to bring: Sea kayak if you have one but we can only manage about 6 as we have only 2-3 lanes to use. So if you do not have a sea kayak please come. Be sure to clean your kayak before you arrive and remove any gravel or dirt from the cockpit. Bring along your spray skirt, hatch covers, PFD, nose clips or goggles, togs or wetsuit, paddle and a paddle float if you have one.
I am showing a DVD on the kayak roll on Friday night 23 June at 96 Redmayne Road, Myross Bush at 7.30 PM. Please ring me on 2157263 for directions or just turn up if you know the way.
We hope to teach the basics of the roll but for more advanced kayakers the goal is to do a re-entry and roll and a roll in surf. Another basic technique is an eskimo bow rescue or roll which I find invaluable when out at sea.
Network Trip:
I have several planned for the winter on the following dates weather dependent
Wednesday 21 June: Winter Solstice trip. Night paddle at Bluff or on the Oreti River.
This is being organised by Belinda. Please phone her for details 2157263
Saturday/Sunday 1/2 July: Lake Hauroko paddle and an optional climb of Caroline Peak
This trip was suggested by Jon Taylor. My plan is to leave on Friday evening for Lake Hauroko and kayak 9kms to Caroline Hut where we will spend the night. On Saturday morning some can leave and kayak another 6 kms, land, and climb up to the bushline on the ridge leading to Caroline Peak (1704 metres) and camp. Sunday will be a climb to the summit and return the same way. People not keen on the climb can base themselves at Caroline Hut and do a day trip from here perhaps to the head of the lake and rendezvous with the climbing party on Sunday for the return trip. Leader is Stanley ph 2157263
Saturday/Sunday 29/30 July: Lake Hauroko paddle and an optional climb of White Peak
This one is my bright idea. My plan is to leave on Friday evening for Lake Hauroko and kayak 12 kilometres to Rooney Creek and camp. On Saturday we have the option of climbing to the bushline and camping. OnSudnay we go for the top at 1574 metres and return the same way. People not keen on the climb can base themselves at a camp at Rooney Creek and do a day trip from here perhaps to the head of the lake and rendezvous with the climbing party on Sunday for the return trip. Winter is a great time to get out. It is not too hot and the mountains look great with a covering of snow and the sandflies are not too bad.
In July I am hoping to organise a social evening with a presentation on the Gumotex Expedition. I will see when Simon is free and I will organise a suitable date in due course.
In spring we are going to organise a Riverton Day again with a session in the pool there on rolling and a trip out to Pig Island and dinner/BBQ back at Riverton.
Also in in spring we are considering having a network weekend at Newhaven near Ponuawea. This area looks like it has a lot of sheltered estuary sea kayaking as well as more challenging coastal kayaking.
Kayak Rental:
After numerous requests for a local sea kayak rental I have bought a new Shearwater Sea Kayak which is available for rent to experienced paddlers or on club trips. I will include all the usual accessories. Contact Stanley If you want to rent a sea kayak Ph 2157263.
New Website:
The Southland Sea kayakers Network has a new web-site address as follows
sskn.uniformnz.com
Basic Emergency Kit:
This is highly recommended for all tramping and sea kayaking trips. It is a Basic Emergency Kit not a comprehensive one by any means. For sea kayaking emergencies other equipment is of course necessary but not practical to include in this basic kit such as orange smoke, red hand held flares, VHF radio etc.
This is the list of items included
-Dry bag xs
-Waterproof matches and cigarette lighter
-Small torch and spare alkaline battery
-Pencil, paper and xs zip lock bags
-Firestarters
-Small compass
-Mirror
-Illumstick

$100.00 is cheap if you life is in danger.
Contact Stanley if interested.
