Dear Southland Sea Kayakers
Since Christmas the weather and sea conditions have been rather poor in the south but despite this a few parties have been kayaking in Rakiura. I believe Susan Cade and friends have been to Pegasus and Max Grant and family have been in Patersons Inlet. At Christmas Jacqui and Tim Anderson, Colin, Belinda and I had a day trip from Colac Bay out to Pig Island for lunch and then on to Riverton. It was a lovely clear day but on the Pig island to Riverton leg, the sea breezes made for a lively paddle. Riverton is arguably the best location on the south coast for sea kayaking. It has the added advantage if the sea conditions are too rough to pull in and have a latte at the Beach House cafe.
Sea Kayak Course
On Thursday 9th March John Kirk-Anderson, a well known sea kayak coach and BCU instructor is holding a day long sea kayak course at Riverton. Enclosed are details of the course in this email from Stephen Counsell.
Hi Stanley
As you know I have a small company called Sea Kayaks Pacific Ltd. My partner in this venture is John Kirk-Anderson. John (or JKA to his mates) may not be as well known to Southland paddlers as he is to others around NZ as we have not run courses this far south.
FYI...John Lives with his wife Mary in a house overlooking Lyttelton harbour. He does not have a garage. He has a boat shed though, and it is full of sea kayaks! As well as his full time job as a Press photographer He is a BCU Level Four Coach Sea and a NZOIA Level Two Sea Kayak Instructor. He will be opening speaker at the Coast Busters Sea Kayak Forum north of Auckland this year. The reason I tell you this is because after attempting a circumnavigation of Stewart island in February of this year (2006) I have convinced him to take an extra few days off work and run a course in Southland for more advanced paddlers. So for anyone interested here are the details:
What: One day sea kayak course with John Kirk-Anderson.
When: Thursday March 9th 2006
Where: Riverton
Focus: Incident Management and Rescue Scenarios
Numbers: Limited to 6 paddlers
Price: $120 per person
Book: By first either phoning or e-mailing me: Stephen Counsell on 021 123 6080 or [email protected] Your booking is not confirmed until receipt of your cheque. Your questions are welcome
This is a professional sea kayak course and I recommend people register for it. Belinda and I have already put our names down for it.
