Dear Southland Sea Kayakers
This weekend Louise Parker and I have organised a weekend of kayaking activities based at Riverton.
The programme is as follows:
Riverton Weekend 3/4 December
Date: 3/4 December.
Venue: Jacqui and Tim Anderson, 3 James St., Riverton
Time: 10 AM Saturday meet at Jaqcui and Tims house.

Accomodation: At Jacqui and Tims house.
What to bring: Kayaks, towels, wet/dry suits, sleeping bags and food for the weekend including a plate of communal food for a dinner. Tim and Jacqui have about 8 beds available and can accommodate a tent or two.
Money: Will need some for the Riverton Pool if we manage to book it in time. There may be some other small expenses as well.
Programme: We plan a paddle on the Saturday morning which is dependent on conditions. Low tide is at about 9.30 AM. Ideas are to paddle in the estuary or perhaps to Pig Island. Take a packed lunch. In the afternoon we were planning either surf practice or a walk across the hills above Riverton or rock-climbing at Riverton Rocks. Louise and I will take some rock gear along. For Sunday we were hoping to get the use the Riverton Pool 10-12 noon for rolling practice and re-entry and roll which is a follow-on from our Monowai weekend recently. In the afternoon we were planning on more surf practice, rolling in the ocean and eskimo bow rolls.

News
The Monowai kayaking skills weekend on 19/20 November was well attended with about 20 participants. We had excellent resource people such as Stephen Counsell, Joanne Cannon, Adele Corson, Terry MacNamara, Jon Taylor and Alon Ohad. The pool session at Blackmount was great with a wide variety of rescue methods practiced. On the Sunday we had a paddle on the lake which was hampered to some extent by high winds but nevertheless further skills such as towing was practised.
On Monday 21 November Alon Ohad gave a power point presentation on his circumnavigation of Tasmania last summer at our house. This was a riveting account of a major kayaking expedition. Details and a photo-gallery is on his web-site www.ohad.info.
Last weekend several members including Noel Carson, Mike Larsen, Belinda and Stanley were out at Awarua Bay practising our rolling techniques and on Sunday we were out at Oreti Beach in near perfect conditons practising in the surf.
Looking ahead there is strong interest in a circumnavigation of Stewart Island by several of our members.
