Dear Southland Sea Kayakers
We have finished our winter series of rolling classes and now have a number of members proficient in rolling sea kayaks. This is an ongoing skill we will continue to practice over spring and summer at Bluff and at Riverton. Again our aim is to build up a core of very experienced sea kayakers in our network and pass these skills onto new members.
We have a special thanks to Mike and Adele Larsens for attending our rolling classes and instructing. It has been tremendous having someone so experienced helping us out.
Network Trips
Saturday/Sunday 10/11 September : Milford Sound
This is our second time to try to run this trip. I will only run it if there is a good turnout and I request people to register with me ASAP. The plan is to be on the water by 9.00 AM Saturday at Fishermans Wharf and kayak to Anita Bay outside the Milford head where we will camp. It is a magic place. My phone number is 2157263 ( home) and 2110999 ( work). Please register your interest now.
Sunday 9th October : Day trip Riverton
The provisional plan is to book the pool at Riverton for a rolling class in the morning and to have a rolling/surf practice in the afternoon in the estuary. We will have lunch at Tim and Jacqui Andedrson's place at Riverton.
Sunday 30 October: Day trip Bluff
The provisional plan is to do a day trip at Bluff which will be weather dependent and to have rolling practice at the Awarua Boating club where we have assess to warm showers.
Monowai Weekend: 19/20 November
This is our annual skills weekend which will be on similar lines to the previous 2 years courses we have run at Monowai. We base ourselves at the Monowai Holiday Village campground where there are huts, a cottage and a large kitchen. I hope to add a new segment this year on medical aspects sea kayaking. Please register your interest now.
Other ideas for trips
I am keen to have a Foveaux Strait crossing again soon. This time I'd like to cross via Ruapuke Island and will seek permission to camp there before continuing on to Rakiura.
Sometime later in the summer I was thinking of having a 4 day camp down in Patterson Inlet on Rakiura.
Anyone interested in these proposed trips please let me know.

Obscured by Waves - South Island Kayak Odyssey’ is finally back in print, in a totally revamped second edition.
The book is A4 in size, a similar format to that of ‘Dreamtime Voyage’; 192pp, 16 colour photos, 59 black and white photos, and 38 maps.
More photos have been added, including one of the 25th anniversay re-union of the completion of the Fiordland section of the trip at Jackson Bay.
The bulk of the print run is limpbound or soft cover, but 100 copies will be bound as Hardbacks, which will be a signed and numbered collector’s edition.
Price: for the limpbound edition: $35, including post and packaging.
The hardback edition is still some weeks away from binding, but price is anticipated at $50 including courier freight.
I will be down in Invercargill probably week starting 4 Sept, and hopefully the bookshops will take a few copies. However I was wondering if you could put a note out for your SSK network that the book is now available. I can either mail copies down to paddlers who order directly or if you are willing to accept orders from the network paddlers, I will drop the books off. Whatever is easiest.
I will also be including an order form as in insert with the next KASK n/l. Due out mid-Sept.
I will be going to the Southland Times for a little publicity, as they covered my trip and that of Stewart Island rather fully.
cheers
