Dear Southland Sea Kayakers
13 August 2005
To date we have had 4 rolling classes and it is pleasing to see progress is being made by participants in reliable eskimo rolling in sea kayaks. The next kayak rolling classes is on Sunday 21th August from 4.30-6.30 PM at Splash Palace. . We need one sea kayak per 2 persons and It must be cleaned before it is taken into the pool. Please make sure all gravel/sand is removed from the cockpit before you take it in. The staff at Splash Palace will also hose down the kayaks before they are put in the water. Bring along you PFD and paddle plus goggles or nose clip as this make it a more enjoyable experience.
You should make up a paddle float of 2 sheets of polystyrene foam slightly wider than the paddle blade held together with duct tape. The paddle fits in between the sheets and assists in learning the technique.
The cost is the admission cost and a dollar or two to Stanley for the lane hire depending on numbers
I have decided to continue rolling classes during spring in some of the smaller heated pools in Southland at Bluff and at Riverton combined with the real thing at sea. Our aim is to build up a core of experienced sea kayakers here in Southland who have all the necessary skills and pass these on to others.
Network Trips
Saturday/Sunday 10/11 September : Milford Sound
I cancelled this weekends trip due to the poor weather forecast and am running it on the above weekend next month. The plan is to be on the water by 9.00 AM Saturday at Fishermans Wharf and kayak to Anita Bay outside the Milford head where we will camp. It is a magic place. My phone number is 2157263 ( home) and 2110999 ( work). Please register your interest now.
Sunday 9th October : Day trip Riverton
The provisional plan is to book the pool at Riverton for a rolling class in the morning and to have a rolling/surf practice in the afternoon in the estuary.
Sunday 30 October: Day trip Bluff
The provisional plan is to do a day trip at Bluff which will be weather dependent and to have rolling practice at the Awarua Boating club where we have assess to warm showers.
Monowai Weekend: 19/20 November
This is our annual skills weekend which will be on similar lines to the previous 2 years courses we have run at Monowai. I hope to add a new segment this year on medical emergencies in sea kayaking.
Other ideas for trips
I am keen to have a Foveaux Strait crossing again soon. This time I'd like to cross via Ruapuke Island and will seek permission to camp there before continuing on to Rakiura.
Sometime later in the summer I was thinking of having a 4 day camp down in Patterson Inlet on Rakiura.
Anyone interested in these proposed trips please let me know.
New Website:
The Southland Sea kayakers Network has a new web-site address as follows
sskn.uniformnz.com
Terry has revamped the network web site which look great especially the photo gallery and links. Check out the photos of Preservation Sound.
Basic Emergency Kit
This is highly recommended for all tramping and sea kayaking trips. It is a Basic Emergency Kit not a comprehensive one by any means. For sea kayaking emergencies other equipment is of course necessary but not practical to include in this basic kit such as orange smoke, red hand held flares, VHF radio etc.
This is the list of items included
The cost is $ 100.00
$100.00 is cheap if you life is in danger.
Contact Stanley if interested.
