Dear Southland Sea Kayakers
6/8/05
This is a reminder about our next rolling class tomorrow evening and our network trip next weekend on Milford Sound.
The next kayak rolling classes is on Sunday 7th August from 4.30-6.30 PM at Splash Palace. The dates of the other class is Sunday 21 August 4.30 -6.30 PM. We need one sea kayak per 2 persons and It must be cleaned before it is taken into the pool. Please make sure all gravel/sand is removed from the cockpit before you take it in. The staff at Splash Palace will also hose down the kayaks before they are put in the water. Bring along you PFD and paddle plus goggles or nose clip as this make it a more enjoyable experience.
You should make up a paddle float of 2 sheets of polystyrene foam slightly wider than the paddle blade held together with duct tape. The paddle fits in between the sheets and assists in learning the technique.
The cost is the admission cost and a dollar or two to Stanley for the lane hire depending on numbers.

Ocean Beach Trip
Today Belinda and I on the spur of the moment decided to do a paddle trip from Ocean Beach on the harbour side down past the shipping wharves out to sea and around to Ocean Beach, a distance of about 11 kilometres. It was a lovely day today with clear skies and a light breeze. High tide was 2.55 PM at Bluff. We left just before 2 PM and kayaked to Stirling Point. There was a gentle swell and the sea was quite choppy. We carried on westwards rounding several headlands before the tall chimney of Ocean Beach appeared. The only exciting episode was landing on the stony beach there. There was quite a swell rolling in and Belinda copped a gum boot full of water when jumping out. I always send Belinda in first because not only is she a better sea kayaker but also she has a polyethylene kayak. I have to molly coddle by fibreglass kayak! When my turn came I let several big swells race underneath me before committing myself to the run in without mishap.
This is a great wee trip right on our doorstep and is only a 1.5-2 hour paddle if conditions right.
