Southland Sea Kayakers
1st May 2005
Dear Southland Sea Kayakers
It has been a quiet time on the water since we arrived back from Tasmania mostly due to work commitments. We are now planning a number of network activities that will give people an opportunity to get out on trips and up-skill.
Network Evening:
This is planned for Tuesday 10th May at our house this time. It will start at 7.30 PM at 96 Redmayne Road, Myross Bush, Invercargill and we will be showing slides of the Preservation Sound trip. Please bring a plate for supper. Directions to our place:
north along Queens Drive to the round-about on Bainfield Road. Turn right into Bainfield Rd and take 3rd road on left which is Redmayne Road. We are 3rd house on the right counting corner house. If you get lost ring us on 2157263.
Trips
Liz Cave circumnavigated Stewart island during the summer. It sounds like a great trip and I'd like to hear more.
On 9th April Simon Marwick, Tim and Jacqui Anderson and I kayaked out of Riverton on our way to Bluff, a distance of about 45 kilometres. There was a 4 metre swell out there plus fog and conditions were not as good as I had thought so we aborted and went to Pig Island where we landed and had a late breakfast before heading back to Riverton. The next weekend we were all set to kayak to Ruapuki and Stewart island but we failed to get permission to land on Ruapuki and the weather was not good enough so we cancelled. Simon Marwick has just returned from a 10 day kayak trip in Doubtful Sound. He reports a mixed bag of weather but managed to get around and climb a few mountains too. Max Grant and 2 friends have just started an epic Fiordland sea kayak trip down the Hollyford River to Martins Bay and on down to Doubtful Sound.
If anyone would like to lead a trip please let me know. I will organise some over the winter on the Southern Lakes.
For Sale
I bought 2 screen tent for the Preservation Sound trip and I am selling one of them. It is called an Oz Trail Screen Dome Tent and Fly. It measures 330x330x210 and is brand new. It is ideal for sand-fly protection. I am selling it at whole sale price of $300.00. The other one I am keeping for future expeditions.
Rolling classes
I will be organising rolling classes at Splash Palace during the winter. I was thinking of having them every 2-3 weeks or maybe a succession of them over a month. Please let me know what you would prefer. I am open to suggestions.
What is special about our Sea Kayak Network?
Did you know we are the most southerly Sea Kayak club in the world. We have also one of the most amazing sea kayak destinations in the world on our doorstep, Fiordland.
