Dear Sea Kayakers
We had a successful inaugural trip on Lake Manapouri on 1 November. The weather held off and we had an enjoyable paddle from Supply Bay to Moterau Hut for lunch and back again. There were 9 of us and it was a pretty relaxed trip.
Matt and I are organising another network meeting at H&J Outdoor World at 7.30 PM on Wednesday 26 November. We thought it might be appropriate to request a donation of $2 pp to cover the cost of supper. At the meeting I would like to discuss trip meets for the next 6 months and see who is prepared to lead trips. I would like to also talk about a proposed mini-forum next year as we have run out of time this year to get one under way. I will need help and suggestions if this is to come to fruition. Another issue is an up-skilling weekend and hopefully we can use some local resource persons for this. I may also have a slide show and if anyone is interested in showing slides of kayaking trips please contact me.
I am very happy to hear of your kayaking exploits and welcome emails to me about them to send out with email newsletters to the network. I am also keen to hear of anyone who is prepared to lead trips and can advertise this on the network.
I am organising another day trip on Sunday 23 November locally depending on tides and weather. I thought we could kayak from Whalers Bay to Omaui and back, or Awarua Bay or Bluff Harbour. If it was a great day we could go from Ocean Beach west along the coast. I am not confident yet to take a group out into Foveaux Strait but I hope we can progress to that stage later.
My vision for the future is to have an active and experienced group sea kayakers here in the south that goes not only on day trips but can also take on the big trips that abound in our region.
