Dear Friends
This is an news update on our Southland Sea Kayak Network.
I hope people who attended our first meeting last Wednesday found it worthwhile. We have about 30 members now with a wide variety of skills listening to what people had to say.
I have been in contact with Vincent Maire, the president of KASK who sends his congratulations and is very supportive of the network. I raised the issue of Public Liability insurance for network activities and he said KASK is not in a position to cover networks at this point in time which leaves me with the responsibility of telling people who are not adequately prepared for sea kayak trips that they should not venture out. I think it is only common sense that people must be responsible for their own safety and cannot expect others in the network to be legally responsible.
KASK have a very good website_ www.kask.co.nz You can down load an application form and send your $25.00 for single membership or $30.00 for family membership to them. You get a free KASK Sea Kayak handbook with membership.
Mark Aplin is doing the KASK award proficiency assessors training weekend on 1/2 November and if anyone would also like to attend they should contact Susan Cade at KASK. I suggest anyone interested should also contact Mark. His email address is [email protected] he is keen to share travel costs.
I am organising our first sea kayak trip on Saturday 1 November on Lake Manapouri. The plan is to wait till Wednesday 29 October for the final go ahead once I¹ve checked the latest weather forecast. I will send an email around confirming the outing. We meet at the slipway on the wharf at Manapouri township 9.30-10.00 AM. We will kayak around to Hope Arm for lunch and meander homeward in the afternoon.
You can hire kayaks from Jo or Reg at Adventure Kayak and Cruise in Manapouri email: [email protected] or from Daphne and Bill at Fiordland Wilderness Experiences email: [email protected] Bill and Daphne are running a guided trip on Manapouri that weekend so will be in the area. I suggest it might be best to contact them soon to book your kayak.
Please I do not want to see anyone without a PFD (life jacket) , spray skirt and adequate clothing including waterproof jacket and some food.
I will need some help with organising a mini-forum and if anyone is interested please let me know.
Safe kayaking
