1st September 2004
Spring has finally arrived and with it we have an interesting programme of events in the offing. On the 12 September we have our 4th kayak rolling practice at Splash Palace. On 15 September we have a meeting showing slides of our sea kayaking trips this year and a talk by Belinda on kayaking photography. Details are as follows:
Kayak rolling practice:
Sunday 12 September
Sea and river kayak rolling practice at Splash Palace 4.30-6.30 PM. Cost is entry fee and $6.00 pp to Stanley for use of pool and for Southland Canoe Club. I will be using several river kayaks and will also be taking 3 sea kayaks into the pool. Please do not bring your own sea kayaks as I am providing them under certain conditions by pool management. Please bring your own PFD's, paddle, face mask or nose clips.
Slide Show - Hints on Photography:
Wednesday 15 September at H&J Outdoor World 27 Tay St., Invercargill at 7.30 PM
There will be a slide show on our network trips this year. We have had some excellent trips exploring the coast from Bluff to Centre Island and on our local rivers. If anyone has slides of these trip please let me have them before the meeting. Belinda will also take a session of photography and has included the following information on this.
Photography Hints for Sea Kayakers
How to ruin your camera in one easy lesson.
How to look after your gear.
What to buy, camera, film, etc (some very limited ideas here. This is just to give you something to start thinking about, and also to get some ideas from others)
Wonder why your photos look boring? How to make an interesting picture.
(Basic photography hints on composition, interest, simplify, lighting, etc)
Some picture analyses.
Slides of some trips done over the last year.
Handout of an article by Gary Luhm.
I can guarantee this will not be boring.
There will be opportunity for discussion and questions.
I am aiming this at the layperson level.
See you Wed night.

Trip Reports:
Last Sunday Jacqui and Tim Anderson and Belinda and Stanley decided to make the most of a beautiful day and kayaked from Riverton to Pig Island for lunch. This small island lies just west of Howells Point about 7 kilometres from Riverton. Jacqui and Tim wheeled their plastic double kayak down from their house on the hill in Riverton to the beach on the west side of the Jacobs River Estuary. From there we kayaked out onto a relatively placid sea though some waves were breaking off to the right. We kept heading straight out till abreast of Howells Point and then turned west. We were pushing some tide and the sea was unsettled with an easterly wind behind us. Pig island came up and we could see waves breaking on the east side. On the north side is a sandy beach and we eventually reached this to find quite a large surge. Jacqui and Tim shot in and quickly jumped out and pulled their kayak clear of the next breaking wave. Then B and I paddled in between sets of waves. It was sunny and very clear with spendid views across to Mt Anglem on Stewart island and off to the west an array of snowy peaks in Fiordland. We climbed up the hill on the island for lunch and later returned to our kayaks for a perfect launch. The sea was calmer for the return trip and we tripped along quite fast. In the Riverton Bay we zig zagged around some breaking waves. There was a bit of excitement as we neared the river as there were some breaking waves sweeping in fast here. We eventually pulled into the beach again after a tiring pull against the outgoing current.
Skills Weekend
In November we are organising a skills weekend at Monowai and will be hiring the pool at Blackmount for rolling and self rescue practice as well as more sessions on the river and on the lake. It will also be a shake down trip for the Preservation Sound Kayaking Expedition in February. More details later.
Safe kayaking.
