Dear Southland Sea Kayakers
There have been a number of events occurring in our network over the last month and more planned for people keen on getting out kayaking.
On 21 March we had our first Surf launching/landing course ably run by Mark Aplin at Oreti Beach in somewhat stormy conditions. 7 brave souls went out into that maelstrom of flying spray and crashing waves. Conditions limited the value of proper surf practice and we are keen to stage it again soon preferably at Riverton where I am told its not so exposed to wind.
On 27/28 March, 5 of us went kayaking up the South Fiord of Lake Te Anau. It was quite breezy and we had a headwind most of the time going in and had to pull out about 10 kilometres up the fiord due to deteriorating conditions. We had a pleasant camp in the forest and Sunday proved to be better and we kayaked. Noel gave us an unusual demonstration of the carving turn in his new fibreglass kayak which was quickly followed by a demonstration of the T rescue. We decided after this trip that we need an objective on our kayak trips on the lakes either a demonstration of techniques or a destination such as a hut or a mountain peak.
On 5th of April Paul Caffyn gave us an illuminating talk about sea kayak accidents which he is chronicling followed by slides of his Greenland trip. It was a pity more of our network were unable to attend as its not often we have guests of Paul's calibre to speak to us.
There are 2 trips on for this weekend. Mark sent me this email with details of his Dunedin trip:
Hi Stan - do come if you can, and please circulate to the Network Members
Kath & I and a couple of friends are planning to go sea kayaking in the Dunedin Harbour/Port Chalmers area this weekend, 17th & 18th April.
As wild camping in the area is difficult/impossible we'll probably do 2 day paddles, one on Sat & 1 on Sun and stay in a B&B or camp ground on Sat night.
If anyone else is interested in coming along please get in touch with me on 03-236-2510 (home) or 021-710-068 (mobile).
Cheers
Mark Aplin

I am planning a trip on Saturday locally. Low tide is at 6: 24 so we need to start early. I am keen to kayak from Riverton to Bluff and so far conditions look favourable. If this does not look good then we may just do surf practice at Riverton. Email me tomorrow night or ring me at home if you are interested. Phone 2157263 (after 8pm)
